Is it in the name? Is it the belief by more than 25 percent of Americans that he is Muslim despite his repeated affirmation that he is Christian, and doubt that he was born in the United States? Or, is it because he is the first black President of the United States?
Unlike any other president before him, President Barack Obama’s place of birth is persistently challenged. It began when he won the Democratic Primaries in 2008. The claims have been made by Republican elected officials, many fringe activists, and prospective political opponents. The latest to join the ranks of the “Birthers” is none other than the renowned businessman, Donald Trump, who has also announced that he is considering running for president of the United States himself — against President Obama.
Republican members of Congress and state legislatures have proposed and voted for legislation that would require presidential candidates to provide documentation of their qualifications to be president, including natural-born citizenship.
Lawsuits have been filed in lower courts, seeking to disqualify Obama as President. They have all been rejected by the lower courts. Three lawsuits have gone all the way to the United States Supreme Court, but all three have also been dismissed.
Despite the state of Hawaii releasing an official birth record, the newspaper announcement of birth submitted by the hospital where President Obama was born, and the findings of investigative reports of journalists from around the world who confirm that he was indeed born in the United States, there are those who continue to persist that he was not.
Why?
Has any other president been asked to produce a birth certificate to prove that he is a natural citizen of the United States?
Why isn’t President Obama birth certificate proof enough?
In terms of his religious faith, why does the media and political leaders still proffer over the airways that President Obama is Muslim? Is it the negative “cloud" of being a sympathizer and practitioner of terrorism associated with the religion that is driving the conspiracy theorists? Is it because Obama doesn’t wear his religious faith on his sleeve and is not seen worshiping every Sunday at a Church in Washington, D.C.?
Did people question President Ronald Reagan and other presidents who were not seen going to church on Sundays? Do we even know the religious affiliation of all of our past presidents?
We certainly have never questioned where they were born, or their religious beliefs, and nor have we questioned it so doggedly.
Specifically:
Why do you think the birthplace and religion of President Barack Obama continues to be challenged?
What more do you think President Obama should do, if he can do anything, to once, and for all quell the accusations?
What do you think?

President Obama
I have mixed emotions on this topic. Firstly, I will admit that NOT because of his color, but his name I have also questioned the authenticity of his claims. You can not deny that his name in it of itself is alarming, but it is not enough reason to question his natural citizenship as much as it has been. This issue has been beaten to death, and now I personally believe it is just an easy out for people to use against him. I am all for being a proud American, but think about some other places in the world where we would benefit from accepting some of their policies. For example, Iceland has just been deemed "best place to live" because of their free-market economy and good health care. Why would it be so horrible to have a president who is accustomed to the ways in Iceland, who wants to bring the same customs here to help and fix our dreadful economy. This of course is not what I am suggesting, but it is an interesting thought. We, as a country should study other policies and put serious thought into a solution for our current situation. In conclusion, regardless of where President Obama was born, if he was appointed by the majority to lead, then let him lead.
Lets be honest, we know the reason
Allow me to blunt just for a moment because this is just too obvious…it’s because President Obama is black let’s all be honest here for a moment we all know it’s true. I mean the man has been continually harassed about the matter since he has been in office, he showed his actual birth certificate, and numerous lawsuits have been dismissed against him and yet the questions still seem to find their way onto his doorstep. And I respect Obama for his composure for anyone else would have flipped a table right now at the outlandish accusations placed against him. What can Obama do to lessen the aggression of the relentless questions asked by ignorant individuals? Nothing to be honest, all he can do is to finish up his term and retire because once the new president is elected the questions will stop believe me.
President
This nation much bigger issues to deal with than the petty acquisition that Obama was born outside the States. I think the reason people are picking this issue apart is they are still so mad he won the presidency! They are making low digs and focusing on parts of his life that don’t make the slightest difference in the big picture because he already won. He has a birth certificate to prove his nationality. They can’t accept that though. As for what Obama should do from this point, I think he should continue to do what he’s been doing. Ignore the false stories, focus on the country, and be confident in his position. I’m by no means a big Obama fan, but I’m definitely not a fan of people turning rumors into issues of national proportion.
Two Points
Contrary to other opinions on this board, I do not believe that President Obama is being criticized because is black. I do believe this questioning is happening for two reasons: his status as a Democrat and the idiocracy of people that believe he is Muslim. In the history of politics, we see a history of the two sides of politics in the U.S. taking theoretical punches at one another. For Republicans and Tea Party members especially, this is a way to bring negative publicity and damage his reputation in the United States especially with an election coming up soon. The second reason is that as the article mentions twenty five percent of Americans believe that the president is Muslim even though it is public that he is a christian.
Racism
These questions continue to arise because he is the first black president ever. The racism in our country contribute to this issue everyday. It doesn’t help the fact that he attended a Muslim school as a child either. The change that he has bought to this country is something no one has ever seen before and is still new to lots of people. People don’t want a black president that is what it comes down to.
I think Obama is receiving
I think Obama is receiving this criticism for every reason that is mentioned. It seems like in our history the media finds one issue with every president and runs with it and that seems to be all you hear about. For President Bush it was his quality of speech which then brought out questions of his education background. Do I think Obama receives more scrutiny than previous president, yes. But he of all people knew this was going to happen and I think has handled himself in a respectful manor. He has answered every question that has been placed in front of him and has provided evidence to deny any accusation against him. Our human nature, or more American nature is untrusting of our political leaders to there will constantly be controversy over who is in power. I do however thing it is worse for Obama because of his race and the origin of his name but all he can do is answer the questions placed in front of him. I disagree with people who say that he shouldn’t have to prove himself because no one before him did however. He is the president of the United States he choose to give his life to the American people. He should have nothing to hide so why not answer the questions that are placed in front of you.
Although it was good of Obama
Although it was good of Obama to answer the questions of his citizenship without throwing a fit about it, I do not agree with you that he chose to become President and therefore, he must answer the questions that are posed to him. I think that, as the first black president, he couldn't have possibly foreseen the treatment that he would have to endure for this honor. There is no way that Obama could have realized that people would be so overtly racist toward him as to question whether a black man (believe it or not) would do so well in the United States as to obtain the highest level of position in the country. It doesn't matter if Obama has nothing to hide or not- he should never have been posed questions that no other president has had to endure, simply because of the color of his skin. To me, it is an embarrassment to the country to be so disrespectful to our president and to question his worthiness.
Racist Society
President Obama has had to go through many obstacles since first stepping into the spotlight as a candidate for the President of the United States. The entire time he competed for the position and throughout the duration of his presidency he has had to overcome controversy from the public as to how he must be classified. Coming into the race for the presidential election he knew he would have to battle through all the negative remarks of people towards his job as a president, especially because he is racially different. President Obama is half black and half white, he is as equally white as he is black. However, most people consider him black, but for what? Why can't he be considered white? Because of the racial conflict that society has continually brought up as such a big deal, President Obama is unfairly at the forefront of racial dispute because of his position and his race. Instead of accepting him as he is and judging him based on his performance, President Obama has to be looked at in a new light of which we are not used to because he is "black". As modern Americans in this day in age we should be able to see past ethnicity and base people off merit, not over what classification of ethnicity they are. The political system is unfair towards President Obama only because he is different from the previous presidents, but that gives no reason to judge him based on how he was born. The questioning as to how to classify our President needs to be put to a halt, he is who he is and that is who we elected to represent our country. Whether or not some people may like that he is our president, he still deserves to be treated with respect.
Just forget about it
I think there are a lot people out there that like Obama and a lot that don't. Plain and simple, that's how it is with every president and it's not going to change everyone wants their guy to win. This whole thing about him not being eligible to be president is a bunch of bologna. Obviously he was born in the US or he would not have even had the opportunity to run for president. I think people need to just get over it. His term is about to be up and if you don't like him do something about it. Go vote.
Well pu! I agree 100%. Here
Well pu! I agree 100%. Here in the U.S. we seem to be very team oriented. Unfortunately, we seem to stick with that team to the bitter end. I feel that those who voted for the defeated candidate often spend the following four years commenting on how terrible the President is performing, and merely support their arguments with childish banter and the inevitable..."At least I didn't vote for him." The honest truth is that he is our president, and no amount of questioning his abilities or his identity will change that until the next election. We truly ought to support rather than argue and complain. At the end of the day, In order for our democracy and our society to run more efficiently and successfully, we all need to work together rather than work to part ways.
Issue Of The Week
Why Is President Barack Obama’s Natural Citizenship of The United States Continually Questioned? I believe that it all boils down to him being different. As un-fair as it is some people don’t need justifiable reasons to dislike or question someone integrity so deeply. President Barack Obama is under such profound scrutiny. Anytime anything is different, especially for the first time it is different, it is always questioned and magnified. Sadly, even when President Obama does well, it is less recognized because he is different. I look forward to a day of equality when someone who is different isn’t scrutinized because of their race.
I agree. I think the fact
I agree. I think the fact that President Obama is something America has never had before they're questioning everything about him. I also think it has to do with that fact that a lot of people want him to be something that his not so that they can blame his actions on that. To ay "oh, he's not an American like us. That's why he does what he does".
first of all Donald Trump
first of all Donald Trump should NOT run for presdient..but reading this short passage about how the presdient keeps getting questioned and questioned about where he was born.. i think that it is complete nonsense that he as shown where he was born on paper through a certificate.. many people do not like obama because of his skin and background but in a large run he cant mess up as bad as some of our other presidents have... the questioning of obama will never stop and it is somehting that he will always have to deal with.
Modern-day Racism
I think that race is the number one reason why Obama has been forced time and time again to prove his citizenship. No other president, regardless any 'weirdness' they might have had, has ever had to face these types of questions. To me, the so-called 'birthers' that are scrutinizing Obama so much are not actually questioning his true citizenship; instead, they are questioning his worth and whether or not he is "good" enough to be the President of the United States. Basically, this questioning of someone who has undoubtedly met the requirements to run for president (or else he wouldn't have even been placed on the ballot) is a modern day example of what racism looks like. No white president has ever been asked to provide a birth certificate, so I don't understand why we have to succumb Obama to this type of treatment, either.
Maybe it is just me, but I
Maybe it is just me, but I think the President's birth was called into question because of this little phrase taken out of the Article III of the Constitution of the United States:"No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States." Now that he has proven his birth, it should no longer be an issue. I think it was called into question because President Obama was not very forthcoming with the information. This is not a question of race.
I totally disagree with you.
I totally disagree with you. Our current predominantly white male power structure of government has existed since its inception. For this reason, I do think that President Obama has been put through the undo prejudicial process of proving his birthplace because he is half black. Let’s face it; there is a very real threat to the current power structure whenever anyone who is different enters office. Opening the governmental doors to minorities and women has always been intimidating to certain individuals in privileged positions and they have continually gone to great lengths to undermine progress in this area. With regards to the issues of religion, Thomas Jefferson included the “separation of church and state” in our Bill of Rights. Furthermore, Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution states that, "no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States." This makes the continual questioning of President Obama’s religious affiliation totally inappropriate.
my opinion
I think his race and name have a lot to do with why his citizenship is always called into question. If not his citizenship, then it's his education. Donald Trump is now on this bandwagon of expecting proof. President Obama shouldn't have to prove anything to the media. It's such an easy thing to say that it's because of his race, but it really is. President Obama is the first black president and his name sounds 'ethnic' too. All our previous presidents have had common white folk names and have not been asked to provide any proof of citizenship. Whether it be a white democratic or republican candidate, none of them have been asked to present any documents. Now that we have our first ever black president, his origin of birth and education is highly questioned and under a microscope.
i think a lot of it has to do
i think a lot of it has to do with his race, there are a lot of old folks that make up the population who are racist and probably just aren't used to the idea of a black president. his name is a little suspicious too, but it doesn't mean that he is muslim
