According to some polls, one in five Americans believes President Obama was born outside the United States, despite evidence to the contrary.   One-third of conservative Republicans think he is a Muslim, despite his clear and consistent assertions of his Christian faith.  Some adversaries of the President speak of him with an intensity that comes dangerously close to hatred.

What is happening here?

We can complain about the big donors that have made all of the negative ads that are bombarding the media outlets possible. We can make the claim that those with deep pockets will determine whether Barack Obama or Mitt Romney will become the next president of the United States. But despite big money, the decision still resides with voters.

Will we exercise the massive power we have, or will we punt it away?

The tweaking of voting laws in 23 states, including photo identification laws, requirements to prove citizenship and attempts to purge “non-citizens” from voter rolls, could have a "disproportionate effect" on the ability of people of color to vote in the upcoming election. In fact, these changes might dissuade up to 10 million Hispanics alone from voting, according to a report released September 24 from the Advancement Project.

My grandmother walked with me to the polls when I voted for the first time. Fresh out of high school and 18-years-old, I planned to take my time and make an educated choice on each candidate. For me, it didn’t matter if the candidate was Republican or Democrat.

However, it did to my grandmother.

“Just check the box for Democrat and come on,” she ordered me. And that’s the way it was and is to this day for most blacks.
