Indiana Fails To Utilize Federal Funding For Migrant Children Education

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana never spent millions of dollars the federal government provided to help make sure the children of migrant workers get a good education, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Education.

The federal government awarded the state a total of about $12 million for fiscal years 2010 and 2011, but the Indiana Department of Education didn't claim the grants, the report obtained this week by The Associated Press says.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The Christina School District has reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Education following a civil rights investigation over discipline of black students.

The department says its investigation found that African-Americans in elementary, middle and high schools were disciplined more harshly and more frequently than white students in similar situations.

HONOLULU (AP) - A high school on Hawaii's Big Island was temporarily closed after officials say racial tension and multiple fights culminated in a brawl involving 20 to 30 students, with eight arrests.

Police and state education officials said Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona was closed as teachers and administrators figured out how to get control of problems with students as they began finals exams.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A group in Nebraska is asking young people to participate in a statewide photography exhibit themed around the Latino community.

The Nebraska Latino American Commission says students should submit work that shows Latinos in Nebraska participating in everyday life. Entries must be taken in the state and can include people of any ethnicity.
