Black male teachers are desperately needed in schools across America. Efforts, including at Winston-Salem State University, are being made to establish the next generation of black male teachers.
The historically black college is collaborating with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and Wells Fargo to host a program designed to increase, influence and prepare black male educators nationwide. The HBCU Male Summer Institute is going on through Saturday. It is part of the fund's teacher quality and retention program.
According to a statement from the school, the 30 pre-service teaching students will attend lectures and workshops that emphasize innovations in teaching, as well as other topics such as lesson plan design and professional development.
Historically and predominately black colleges and universities graduate more minority teachers than any other source. The summer institute is designed to help these student teachers enhance the learning experience in their classrooms.
Such programs are needed to recruit, train and place more black male teachers across the country.
