Black World War II Veteran Tells His Story
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - At age 88, Kenyon Parker still goes every day to the gym, where he shares stories of his time as a World War II soldier.
The Frederick resident spent three years in the then-racially segregated U.S. Army, enlisting at age 18.
Parker was a junior in high school when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. A year later, he enlisted and traveled to England, France, Germany, the Panama Canal, and the Philippines.
"I was glad to get away from home," Parker said. "Blacks were dirt poor. I came up in segregated times."

Mixed Race Daughter Of Segregationist Strom Thurmond Dies
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Essie Mae Washington-Williams, the mixed-race daughter of one-time segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond who kept her parentage secret for more than 70 years, has died. She was 87.
Vann Dozier of Leevy's Funeral Home in Columbia said Washington-Williams died Sunday. A cause of death was not given.

African-American children are nine times more likely and Hispanic children three times more likely than white children to have a parent in prison. ATLANTA (AP) - The father of Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as a prominent Atlanta preacher and civil rights leader. But as a young man from a poor sharecropping family in rural Georgia, he is said to have walked north to Atlanta barefoot so he didn't wear out his only pair of shoes.
His legacy is now being honored through a community center built to help other low-income people find a path out of poverty.

French Shooting Spree Blamed On Gunman’s Parents
PARIS (AP) — The radicalization of the French gunman who killed seven people on an eight-day shooting spree this spring began at home, his brother recounts in a new book and documentary, according to media reports.
Mohamed Merah killed three Jewish children, a rabbi, and three paratroopers in and around the southern city of Toulouse in March before dying in a standoff with police. Merah claimed links to al-Qaida and said he had received training at an Islamist paramilitary camp in Pakistan.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — Pedro Chavez was 18 when he left his home in Mexico in 1910 and walked 1,000 miles to El Paso, Texas, in search of a better life.
His country was going through a revolution while the United States offered the promise of jobs building a railroad line.
"There were posters (in Mexico) encouraging workers to come to work on the railroad," said Mary Trunnell, Chavez's granddaughter.
